Pakistan Mourns 18 Killed in Twin Suicide Bombing on Military Base.
Peshawar, March 5: A day of mourning was observed in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday following a devastating twin suicide bombing that targeted a military base in Bannu. The attack claimed 18 lives, including five soldiers, and left 42 others wounded, some critically.
The militant group Jaish Al-Fursan, affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), claimed responsibility for the assault. The attackers detonated explosives to breach the base’s perimeter while most residents were breaking their Ramadan fast or praying at a nearby mosque. The explosion caused severe structural damage, ripping off roofs and collapsing parts of the mosque.
Following the initial blasts, armed militants stormed the base, triggering a fierce gunfight with security forces. An army statement confirmed that five soldiers and 16 militants were killed in the ensuing battle. By early Wednesday, security forces were still sweeping the area, searching for any remaining attackers.
City in Grief
In response to the tragedy, authorities shut down educational institutions, while many businesses remained closed. Joint funeral prayers were held at a local sports complex.
“Rescue teams have recovered three bodies of worshippers trapped under the collapsed mosque roof,” said Alam Khan, a community elder in Bannu.
Bannu, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has been a frequent target of militant attacks. In November 2023, a suicide car bombing killed 12 soldiers at a security post. Similarly, in July, a group of attackers targeted a military facility, using explosives and firearms.
