Published by NEWSINSIDER24

In a significant move towards digital policing, Police Station Qazigund, Kulgam, has successfully registered its first electronic First Information Report (e-FIR) following a complaint lodged via WhatsApp on February 16, 2025.
The complaint was filed by Bashir Ahmad Khanday, who reported that on March 12, 2025, an unknown person, after closely observing his ATM transactions at Chowgam, fraudulently swapped his ATM card. Shortly after, Rs. 22,000 was withdrawn from his bank account without authorization. The victim requested immediate legal action and recovery of his lost money.
Upon receiving the complaint, Qazigund Police promptly took cognizance and registered an e-FIR under case FIR No. 38/2025, invoking Section 303 and 318 BNS. Investigation into the case is underway.
Importantly, this development comes as part of the government’s newly introduced criminal laws, which empower citizens to register FIRs through social media platforms like WhatsApp. This innovative and citizen-friendly initiative aims to make crime reporting more accessible, efficient, and transparent. With the widespread use of social media, the new system is expected to transform public interaction with law enforcement agencies and enhance public safety and justice delivery.
