CPI(M) Leader Tarigami Urges Government to Address Transport Sector Issues.

Srinagar: CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, has called on the government to resolve the growing challenges in the transport sector, particularly those faced by local tourist taxi operators.
Speaking at a convention of All Road Transport Workers’ Unions in Srinagar, Tarigami, who is also the president of CITU J&K, highlighted concerns raised by transporters. He emphasized the need for:
Strict enforcement of licensing rules to prevent private vehicles from operating as tourist taxis without commercial permits.
Review of high airport parking and entry fees, which increase financial burdens on transporters.
Basic amenities for drivers at hotels and lodges to prevent them from sleeping in vehicles.
Regulation of permit issuance to control market oversaturation.
A fixed fare structure for tourist destinations to avoid fare disputes.
National Transport Concerns
Tarigami also raised broader transportation issues, demanding:
Rationalization of diesel prices, insurance premiums, and toll charges.
Financial support for small transporters through government-backed loans.
Reconsideration of the mandatory vehicle scrapping policy.
A government-controlled mobile app to regulate fares and address grievances.
Strengthening of State Transport Undertakings (STUs) with funding and electric bus procurement.
Demand for Worker Rights
He also called for:
Fair treatment of casual, daily-rated, and need-based workers.
Elimination of wage disparities between Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir.
