Amit Shah Reaffirms Jammu and Kashmir’s Statehood Promise, Avoids Timeline

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir will regain statehood, though he refrained from specifying a timeline.
Speaking at the Times Now Summit 2025 on Friday, Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring statehood. “We have assured that statehood will be reinstated. From the very beginning, we have maintained this stance. However, the exact timing cannot be disclosed on a public platform,” he stated in response to a query.
Highlighting last year’s peaceful assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Shah termed it a significant milestone. “For the first time in 40 years, there was no re-polling in any constituency. Not a single bullet or tear gas shell was used. Voter turnout stood at 60%, marking a significant transformation,” he noted.
The BJP-led central government revoked Article 370 in 2019, reorganizing Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. At the time, Shah had assured Parliament that statehood would be restored at an appropriate time.
His latest statement comes amid growing demands from political parties in Jammu and Kashmir for the immediate restoration of full statehood.
